At Empowerment Plan, we work to produce our durable and innovative coat that transforms into a sleeping bag. This employment opportunity ensures that each person we hire is able to earn a stable income, find secure housing, and regain their independence.
Behind the Seams
in the community
Sidewalk Samaritan
Sidewalk Samaritan is a direct aid non-profit made up of volunteers in New York City who provide food, clothing, and hygiene products to the unhoused. Every winter, they distribute EMPWR coats along with their aid. They will often set up right on the sidewalk in neighborhoods across the city to provide resources. This past December, Sidewalk Samaritan was called to help hundreds of migrants who had been bussed in from Florida. These individuals had no warm clothing, no idea where they would sleep, or where their next meal would come from. The volunteers were able to respond to the call with hats, gloves, meals, and EMPWR coats to all in need. Emily Borghard of Sidewalk Samaritan shares:
-
“During the colder months, Empower jackets are the most useful item we can distribute as they fill two critical needs in one easily transported garment: a warm, resilient coat and a warm, durable sleeping/sitting bag. The looks on peoples faces when they receive such a beautifully designed and useful garment is priceless.”
We are grateful to work with such an inspiring organization and look forward to our continued partnership!

Shaniece Threat
Shaniece came to Empowerment Plan in 2022 when she joined as a seamstress. Her determination, infectious personality, and exceptional work ethic made an immediate impact, and recently, Shaniece was promoted to our full time office assistant. She embraces the role and welcomes everyone who walks through the front door with a warmth and joy that makes them feel right at home.
But Shaniece's journey at EP is not just about her work. Her personal growth and achievements in the past year are a direct result of her resiliency and determination to make a better life for her and her daughter despite challenging life circumstances. Last year Shaniece earned her GED, secured housing, and purchased her first car! She shares:
-
"Sometimes life happens, but you've got to hold your head up and know that better will come. If you put in the effort, you will overcome those barriers, and then you will see that you can help other people overcome those barriers. And that's my favorite part about working at Empowerment Plan."
We are lucky to have Shaniece at EP and cannot wait to share in her continued success!
